Radio 1 B.S: Economic Context
What are the key economic contexts of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show?
- How is the BBC funded?
- There is funding through the public licence fee, which is currently £154.50.
- A TV licence is required if you: watch or record live TV programmes on any channel, and/or download or watch any BBC programmes on iPlayer - live, catch up or on demand. This applies to any provider you use and any device, including a TV, desktop computer, laptop, mobile phone, tablet, games console, digital box or DVD/VHS recorder.
- The licence fee lets the BBC provide the public with a range of TV, radio and online content, as well as developing new ways to deliver it to the audience. Some of the licence fee also lets the BBC to remain advertisement-free and independent of shareholder and political interest.
- Does Greg James justify his £225k+ salary?
- Greg James is paid less than the previous presenter for the Breakfast Show, (Nick Grimshaw) and his salary was around £300,000. In a recent article, James claims that he feels "well paid but it's an important job that connects to a lot of people who don't otherwise listen to or watch the BBC. I could get four times more at a commercial station but I never would - I never wanted to do it for the money." and this again reinforces this fact that Greg James is extremely devoted to the interests of his listeners, and he would prefer quality content over a great wage.
- Furthermore, Greg James' inclusive, down-to-earth attitude reels in listeners, as people want to be able to smile early in the morning, if possible; his less glamorous ideas (such as hosting for many celebrities and guest stars, which Grimmy tended to favour) about fun subjects and activities, making it feel realistic and more relatable to the audience's lives, if the topics are more down-to-earth.
- Albeit, The Breakfast Show continues to bring in stars, as it helps keep the fans excited and eager to listen to what the artists have to say, and what they are doing, etc.
- Presenters also must plan ahead for each of their segments, for example, who will be their guest star/which games and activities will they do next, etc. which means that a lot of planning and hard work must be put in to the fun that they develop for each morning.
